2007 Church Survey Results

Pastor Search Committee — Wed, 01/30/2008 - 07:12

In December of 2007 the Search Committee compiled and distributed a Church Survey.  This survey surveyprovides two functions for the search process.  First, it helps us compile a list of traits and qualities that the congregation would like to see in a Pastor.  Second, the results of the survey are also shared with the denomination as well as potential pastors.  They use these results to get a feeling for our congregations unique traits.

The results from all the surveys have been tabulated, and I would like to take a moment to share some of the more interesting results with you.

96% of respondents at least Somewhat Agreed to the following:

  • Our church should be much more involved in the local community.
  • Our church should be focused on serving our members and people outside of our church family.
  • I feel like I am part of the church family.
  • Our church should focus on inviting people to our church.
  • Our church should teach a life of prayer.
  • Our church should encourage small group Bible study and prayer.
  • Our church should have a Christian education process that focuses on life-long learning.
  • My faith has grown over time.

66% of respondents at least Somewhat Agreed to the following:

  • Our church is known as having an effective ministry.
  • The pastor's sermon should always have a specific Bible reference as a theme and relate to contemporary life.
  • Our church music should be at least Somewhat Contemporary.
  • I am willing to help our church grow by witnessing, inviting and serving.
  • Our church should equip people to go out into the world to share the gospel.
  • Individuals in our church are equipped to share Christ in their circles of friends.
  • Our church should teach a life of tithing.
  • Our church should stress giving to Christian Missions beyond the local level.
  • Members of our church family receive appropriate care during times of stress and crisis.
  • Our church provides adequate opportunities for persons from different generations and life stages to come together for fellowship and faith-sharing.
  • We provide enough opportunities for people to share personal testimonies of God's work in their lives and His response to prayer.
  • Children and youth find genuine concern, interest, and a sense of belonging in our church family.
  • I feel that I am fulfilling my commitments to God and our church.

Over 55% of respondents at least Somewhat Disagreed to the following:

  • Our church should be more influenced by history and tradition than by contemporary ideas and trends.

Based on the survey results, the congregation is generally looking for the following traits and skills in a pastor:

  • Somewhat of an Enabler who is Comforting and Assuring, regardless of gender or ethnic background
  • Pastoral Care (sensitivity to congregational needs)
  • Visitation of the sick and shut-ins, visitors and prospective members, and church members
  • Youth Interaction (teenagers, school age, preschool)
  • Worship Leadership
  • Trustful
